TV show recommendations?
My husband and I are looking for a new-to-us show to rent from Blockbuster Online. Something with an ongoing plot that is already out on DVD.

We both liked: Rome, Sopranos, Heroes (first season only, he didn't like the second season), Journeyman, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Quantum Leap

I liked: Buffy, Angel, Battlestar Galactica, X-Files, Twin Peaks, Farscape, Alias, Firefly, Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. (In general, I like shows about good people doing heroic things, and sci-fi/fantasy shows.)

He liked: MacGyver, Dexter, Seinfeld, Family Guy. (But he's more of a fan of movies than of TV shows.)

I don't like: Shows about bad people doing bad things.

He doesn't like: Most sitcoms, mediocre sci-fi.

I liked Deadwood. Ian McShane's Al Swearingen is one of the best villains I've ever seen (on a par with Anthony Hopkins's Hannibal Lecter or Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh, but with more subtly and humanity). Although McShane is a standout, the other actors are all excellent as well. You do see bad people doing bad things, but also good people doing heroic things.

I've heard good things about Babylon 5, though I haven't seen it yet. From what I understand, the acting and sets are often cheesy, but you get engrossed by the strength of the plot.

I remember liking Newhart, the 80's sitcom. I eventually want to watch it again to see if it has held up over time. I recently watched the first season of Northern Exposure, and like it.

I like the first two seasons of the Office (American version).

Babylon 5. The first season is pretty mediocre and a little tough to suffer though for some people. It's important to watch though and sets up a lot of things that play out in the positively outstanding 2nd, 3rd, and 4th season. The 5th season feels a bit tacked on (They didn't expect to HAVE a 5th season). Overall the story is amazing. It has great heroes, redemption, and a whole boatload of personal growth. The characters totally change and grow.

Husband? Boy, have I been out of touch...

In any case, since you like Buffy, Angel, and Twin Peaks, I can just about guarantee you'll like Carnivale. The problem is, it's a six-year story, and they only made two. :-( I've been resisting watching the last four episodes, because when I do, that's all I've got. :-(

And Babylon 5 is a must-watch. You should like it, on the strength of DS9, but if you start and you don't get into it, give it until the end of the second season. It really picks up, to the point where I watched the first 11 episodes of Season 3 without stopping.

:D I was MAD STINKING MAD as I was watching the last three or four episodes of Wonder Falls because I knew there wouldn't be any more. Still chaps my hide just a touch. :)

I wonder if House is available in Blockbuster Online.

Also, I wonder if looking for something new such as
TV shows is a sign of something good/bad is happening
in your marriage.

I think it says more about the writers' strike -- we watched through a bunch of DVDs of shows (Heroes, Rome, etc.), and enjoyed that, so now we're looking for more shows.

I see. I was actually thinking of the cross elasticity of demand
of sex and watching DVDs, various parameters of the utility function,
such as first derivative and second derivative, differences and
similarities between the long run and short run supply curves
on both services/activities in a marriage.

The Prisoner (you'll either really love it or really hate it), Sex and the City, Scrubs, South Park, X-Files...

Are the contents of your old blog archived somewhere? I saved links to information I wanted to reference later...and now it's all gone. =(

Hi Jackie.

Definitely Babylon 5. Seasons 2-4 make up for Season 1 in a big way. I would have suggested Millenium but that would fall under the bad people doing bad things category.

Greg, Devon, and I might be in your neck of the woods in July when Westercon is there. Any email we can reach you at?

Arrested Development is pretty fun, but light (better than Seinfeld, imho).

Wonder Falls is a personal favorite- but it takes a couple of episodes to get going and only lasted 13 episodes. You might like it if you'd be okay with "bad" people being forced to do "heroic" things on accident.

I liked Nowhere Man when it was on- but it was overshadowed by X-Files at the time. Give it three or four episodes and see what you think, I think you'd like it. (and there are traces of MacGyver in there)

Lastly (and I should kick myself for not metioning this earlier), y'all should totally check out Smallville. It goes through rough patches (so did buffy) and sometimes I feel like I'm watching a really slick commercial (note the soundtrack abuse), but the story is really pretty good, especially since you basically know how it is going to end. Oh, and for the first few seasons they grab any opportunity they can for a pass through the girl's locker room. :)

I had mixed feelings on Bab5. There were really great story arcs (both "big wars") but it was handicapped in some places by mediocre acting (mostly one character in season one), at least one "going nowhere" story arc (walkabout?), and (hate to say it) the effects are pretty dated in places.

That being said, it should be watched for its standing in the SF community, if nothing else.

Oh one series I forgot that was released on DVD in 2006 was "Action" with Jay Mohr and Illeana Douglas. A dated (1999) but very scathing look at the whole Hollywood scene. It was one of those Fox series that lasted only one season due to the usual interference by idiotic network execs.

The Wire. If you haven't seen it already, it's the best show on television bar none.

Freaks & Geeks was brilliant but only lasted one season.

I'm currently working through OZ but it's mostly about bad people (in prison).

I've just started Nip/Tuck and I like it a lot.

Nice list of shows there ...

Supernatural is fun sexy sci-fi with a hint of scary and a lot of cheese.

Jpod is a Canadian comedy about game coders, based on a book by Douglas Coupland - very dark and funny.

Tripping the Rift is an animated spoof on sci-fi tv shows, more adult, and as goofy as Family Guy at times.

Little Brittain is a Brittish sketch comedy that's cheeky and silly.

Prison Break's off due to bad people/bad things.

The new Doctor Who series is fabulous, but is awfully kid-friendly. Its spinoff Torchwood falls into the mediocre sci-fi your hubby might loathe.

Lost is getting good again after a couple seasons of suck, but a lot of people either love it and watch every episode - or not a single one in years.

You might also consider switching to Netflix for a month -- they have Unlimited "Watch Now" and a lot of TV shows in the queue, so you could sample lots of shows during the free trial online, meanwhile filling up your Blockbuster queue with new finds.
